Wisdom:  The Way, Truth and Life – John 14:1-14

1.  Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God believe also in me.

2.  In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you.

3.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.

4.  And you know the way to where I am going.

5.  Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?”

6.  Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

7.  If you had known me, you would have known my Father also.  From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

8.  Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.”

9.  Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

10.  Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?  The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.

11.  Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.

12.  “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.

13.  Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

14.  If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

The Wisdom of Jesus – Mark 6:1-6

1.  Jesus went on from there and came to His hometown, accompanied by His disciples.

2.  When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard Him were astonished. “Where did this man get these ideas?” they asked.  “What is this wisdom He has been given?  And how can He perform such miracles?

3.  Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon?  Aren’t His sisters here with us as well?”  And they took offense at Him.

4.  Then Jesus said to them, “Only in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his own household is a prophet without honor.”

5.  So He could not perform any miracles there, except to lay His hands on a few of the sick and heal them.

6.  And He was amazed at their unbelief.  And He went around from village to village, teaching the people.

40.   And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

41.   Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.

42.  And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

43.  And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.

44.  But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.

45.  And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.

46.  And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

47.  And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.

48.  And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, your father and I have sought you sorrowing.

49.  And he said unto them, How is it that you sought me?  know you not that I must be about my Father’s business?

50.   And they understood not the saying which he spoke unto them.

51.   And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

52.   And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

Wisdom’s Vindication – Matthew 11:7-19

7 As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?

8  Otherwise, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? Look, those who wear fine clothing are found in kings’ palaces.

9  What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

10  This is the one about whom it is written:  ‘Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way before You.

11  Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

12  From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subject to violence, and the violent lay claim to it.

13  For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.

14  And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.

15  He who has ears let him hear.

16  To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:

17  ‘We played the flute for you and you did not dance; we sang a lament, and you did not mourn.’

18  For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’

19  The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at this glutton and drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is vindicated by her actions.”

1  Wisdom has built her house, She has hewn out her seven pillars;

2  She has slaughtered her meat, She has mixed her wine, She has also furnished her table.

3  She has sent out her maidens, She cries out from the highest places of the city,

4  “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” As for him who lacks understanding, she says to him,

5  “Come, eat of my bread And drink of the wine I have mixed.

6  Forsake foolishness and live, And go in the way of understanding.

8  Do not correct a scoffer, lest he hate you; Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you.

9  Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

10  “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

13  A foolish woman is clamorous; She is simple, and knows nothing.

14  For she sits at the door of her house, On a seat by the highest places of the city,

15  To call to those who pass by, Who go straight on their way:

16  “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here”; And as for him who lacks understanding, she says to him,

17  “Stolen water is sweet, And bread eaten in secret is pleasant.”

18  But he does not know that the dead are there, That her guests are in the depths of hell.

The Gifts of Wisdom – Proverbs 8:8-14, 17-21

8  All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing forward or perverse in them.

9  They are all plain to him that understands, and right to them that find knowledge.

10  Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.

11  For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.

12  I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.

13  The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogance, and the evil way, and the forward mouth, do I hate.

14  Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.

17  I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.

18  Riches and honor are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness.

19  My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fi ne gold; and my revenue than choice silver.

20  I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment:

21  That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.
