Return To Love and Justice – Hosea 11:1-2, 7-10; 12:1-2, 6-14

1.  WHEN ISRAEL was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.

2  As they called them, so they went from them:  they sacrificed unto Baalim, and burned incense to graven images.

7  And my people are bent to backsliding from me:  though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him.

8  How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? how shall I set thee as Zeboim? mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together.

9  I will not execute the fierceness of mine anger, I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee: and I will not enter into the city.

10  They shall walk after the LORD: he shall roar like a lion: when he shall roar, then the children shall tremble from the west.

1.  EPHRAIM FEEDETH on wind, and follows after the east wind: he daily increaseth lies and desolation; and they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt.

2  The LORD hath also a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him.

6  Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment and wait on thy God continually.

7  He is a merchant, the balances of deceit are in his hand: he loveth to oppress.

8  And Ephraim said, Yet I am become rich, I have found me out substance: in all my labors they shall find none iniquity in me that were sin.

9  And I that am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt will yet make thee to dwell in tabernacles, as in the days of the solemn feast.

10  I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets.

11  Is there iniquity in Gilead? surely they are vanity:  they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal; yea, their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the fields.

12  And Jacob fled into the country of Syria, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept sheep.

13  And by a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved.

14  Ephraim provoked him to anger most bitterly: therefore shall he leave his blood upon him, and his reproach shall his LORD return unto him.

Repent of Injustice – Jeremiah 22:1-10

1.  Thus saith the LORD; Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and speak there this word,

2  And say, Hear the word of the LORD, O king of Judah, that sit upon the throne of David, thou, and thy servants, and thy people that enter in by these gates:

3  Thus saith the LORD; Execute judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place.

4  For if you do this thing indeed, then shall there enter in by the gates of this house kings sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, he, and his servants, and his people.

5  But if you will not hear these words, I swear by myself, saith the LORD, that this house shall become a desolation.

6  For thus saith the LORD unto the king’s house of Judah; You are Gilead unto me, and the head of Lebanon: you surely I will make you a wilderness, and cities which are not inhabited.

7  And I will prepare destroyers against you, everyone with his weapons: and they shall cut down thy choice cedars, and cast them into the fire.

8  And many nations shall pass by this city, and they shall say every man to his neighbor, For what reason hath the LORD done this unto this great city?

9  Then they shall answer, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD their God, and worshiped other gods, and served them.

10  Weep you not for the dead, neither bemoan him: but weep sore for him that goes away: for he shall return no more, nor see his native country.

Practice Justice – Jeremiah 21:8-14

8  And unto this people you shalt say, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.

9  He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth out, and falleth to the Chaldeans that besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey.

10  For I have set my face against this city for evil, and not for good, saith the LORD: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.

11  And touching the house of the king of Judah, say, Hear you the word of the LORD;

12  O house of David, thus saith the LORD; Execute judgment in the morning, and deliver him that is spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor, lest my fury go out like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.

13  Behold, I am against you, O inhabitant of the valley, and rock of the plain, saith the LORD; which say, Who shall come down against us? or who shall enter into our habitations?

14  But I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings, saith the LORD: and I will kindle a fire in the forest thereof, and it shall devour all things round about it.

Peace and Justice Reign – Zechariah 8:1-8, 11-17

1.  Again the word of the LORD of hosts came to me, saying,

2.  Thus saith the LORD of hosts; I was jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I was jealous for her
with great fury.

3  Thus saith the LORD; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the LORD of hosts the holy mountain.

4  Thus saith the LORD of hosts; There shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, and every man with his staff in his hand for very age.

5  And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof.

6  Thus saith the LORD of hosts; If it be marvelous in the eyes of the remnant of this people in these days, should it also be marvelous in mine eyes? saith the LORD of hosts.

7  Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will save my people from the east country, and from the west country;

8  And I will bring them, and they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God, in truth and in righteousness.

11  But now I will not be unto the residue of this people as in the former days, saith the LORD of hosts.

12  For the seed shall be prosperous; the vine shall give her fruit, and the ground shall give her increase, and the heavens shall give their dew; and I will cause the remnant of this people to possess all these things.

13  And it shall come to pass, that as you were a curse among the heathen, O house of Judah, and house of Israel; so will I save you, and you shall be a blessing: fear not, but let your hands be strong.

14  For thus saith the LORD of hosts; As I thought to punish you, when your fathers provoked me to wrath, saith the LORD of hosts, and I repented not:

15  So again have I thought in these days to do well unto Jerusalem and to the house of Judah: fear you not.

16  These are the things that you shall do; Speak you every man the truth to his neighbor; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates:

17  And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbor; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith the LORD.

A Vision of Restoration – Zephaniah 3:14-20

14  Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel; be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem.

15  The LORD hath taken away your judgments, he hath cast out thine enemy: the king of Israel, even the LORD, is in the midst of you: you shalt not see evil any more.

16  In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear you not: and to Zion, Let not thine hands be slack.

17  The LORD your God in the midst of you is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over you with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over you with singing.

18  I will gather them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly, who are of you, to whom the reproach of it was a burden.

19  Behold, at that time I will undo all that afflict you: and I will save her that is lame, and gather her that was driven out; and I will get them praise and fame in every land where they have been put to shame.

20  At that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you: for I will make you a name and a praise among all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, saith the LORD.
