It time once again for our weekly Sunday School preview so thanks for joining me and welcome back. The Spring Quarter entitled “Acknowledging God” focuses on ways God’s people have acknowledged His Greatness. The March unit is entitled “Follow in My Ways” and provides four lessons drawn from the books of Genesis and 2 Chronicles showing how Abraham and Solomon acknowledged God by following His guidance. This Sunday’s lesson is entitled “There Is No God Like You” or “Promises Kept”.
Solomon was the son of King David. King David was a man who loved God and followed Him even though he sinned and gave the enemies of God occasion to blaspheme His holy name with his affair with Bathsheba. But despite this failing, God promised David that there would never fail a man to sit upon his throne if His sons would follow Him as he did with their whole heart. After David’s death, Solomon followed him on the throne and when God asked him what he would like to have as a gift, instead of money or riches or fame, Solomon asked for wisdom. God granted him wisdom and gave him the other things he did not ask for.
Solomon built the temple his father wanted to build but God would not allow him to build. It was magnificent by ancient standards and stood for about 400 years until it was destroyed by the Babylonians. At the dedication service, Solomon prayed before all the people and asked the Lord to fulfilled His promise regarding Israel and David His servant. He asked Him to watch over this temple day and night and hear the prayers that will be prayed there and attend unto the sacrifices. He asked that the Lord’s name and presence be upon the temple and that He would have mercy and hear the cries of His people.
Today, Christians believe that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of God’s promise to never fail to have a man sit upon the throne of David. While David’s descendant kings, including Solomon, failed to walk before the Lord as David did, even though some did much better than others, the coming of Jesus Christ to sit on the throne of David was all in God’s redemptive plan for mankind. He is the King of Kings and the Lord or Lords and of His kingdom there shall be no end and He shall forever sit on the throne of David.
