Greeting Members and Friends

It time once again for our weekly Sunday School preview so thanks for joining me and welcome back.  The Spring Quarter entitled “Acknowledging God” focuses on ways God’s people have acknowledged His Greatness.  The May unit is entitled “Give Praise to God,” and has four sessions that emphasize the people’s response by bringing offerings and dedicating their lives to God’s work.  Three of the responses are found in the books of Exodus, Leviticus, and 2 Corinthians. The unit concludes with one session drawn from the books of Psalms and Hebrews that rejoices in God’s reconciling action on behalf of the people.

This Sunday’s lesson is entitled “Giving from a Generous Heart” or “Generous Giving”.  One of the stumbling stone to saving faith in Christ is giving.  Whether it’s giving of time, resources, money, gifts or talents or in any other form, people fail to give because of lack of faith in God and selfishness.  Godly giving is always sacrificial.  Some people give out of the abundance of what they have or give what they no longer desire or have a need for.  But giving that denies a person of something they needed, could use or wanted for themselves or that causes them suffering in some matter is the type of giving God calls upon us to give.  It is the type of giving Jesus demonstrated in the life He lived and the death He died

The lesson text describes what the children of Israel did when they were asked to give for the building of the tabernacle.  This was a freewill offering of whatever they could and wanted to contribute.  The text emphasized the fact that people gave anything of value including skills, jewelry, linen, precious stones including silver and gold of a free and willing heart.  Another aspect of Godly giving is the motivation and attitude of giving.

The second part of the lesson text comes from 2nd Corinthians which addresses the purpose in giving.  We shouldn’t give out of a sense of guilt or obligation or grudgingly, but because we want to help bless others as we ourselves have been blessed by God.  The song says we can’t beat God giving no matter how we try.  Some people will never prosper because they give so little.  If a person plants or sows only a small portion, they can only expect to receive a small portion.  But if a person plants or sows a large portion, they can expect to receive a large portion.  This is a biblical principle of giving.

To become a Godly giver, we must have faith in God that whatever we give, God will more than take care of it by providing for us all that we need.  I know from my own personal experience that it gives me joy to give to the work of the Lord and God has rewarded me many times over and above in countless ways what I have given for His sake.  And I know there are many others who can give this same testimony concerning giving.     Well, that’s all for this week’s preview.  Be sure to join us in Sunday School this week for a fuller discussion of this lesson and the general topic of Give Praise to God.  So, until then

It time once again for our weekly Sunday School preview so thanks for joining me and welcome back.  The Spring Quarter entitled “Acknowledging God” focuses on ways God’s people have acknowledged His Greatness.  The April unit is entitled “All Glory and Honor” and has five sessions from the book of Luke and John dealing with how Jesus’ resurrection opened the way to honor God and how visions in Revelation praise God with majestic symbolism.  This Sunday’s lesson is entitled “Blessing, Glory, Honor, Forever” or “A World of Joy”.

Some people are afraid of the Book of Revelation.  It is a mysterious book because of all of the imagery that is in it.  And it also has some harsh prophesies for those who don’t believe.  But on the other hand, it is an amazing revelation of what the end times and some of the wonderful things God has planned for His people.  The only people who should be anxious about Revelation are those who are not looking for Christ’s return and are not preparing themselves to meet the Lord.  But for those whose hope is in Christ, Revelation is a blessing because it gives us hope and much to look forward to.

Last week the Apostle John introduced his readers to the Heavenly Throne, the One who sat upon it, and some of the creatures and activities that were going on around the throne.  In today’s lesson, John continues his description of what he saw and tells us about another deity like the one sitting upon the throne.  This deity was receiving the same type of praise, glory and honor as the first deity.  John describe Him as a Lamb that was slain and He was the only one found who was worthy to take the sealed book from the right hand of the One on the throne and open it and read it.

The Deity who took the Book is Jesus Christ who has redeemed the four beast, the elders and mankind out of every nation, people, tongue and family making them to be kings and priest and reign upon the earth.  Then John said he heard and saw what seemed to be thousands or millions of angels who also gave praise and honor to the Lamb.  Finally, John said everything everywhere began to give praise and honor to the Lamb.  Scripture saids that every knee shall bow and every tongue confess the Jesus is Lord.

This description of the Lamb and the praised He received is more proof that Jesus is God for He received the same degree of praise and honor as did the One who sat upon the Throne.  This is why we can be confident when we tell others that Jesus is Lord.  Well, that’s all for this week’s preview.  Be sure to join us in Sunday School this week for a fuller discussion of this lesson and the general topic of All Glory and Honor.  So, until then

Some people are afraid of the Book of Revelation.  It is a mysterious book because of all of the imagery that is in it.  And it also has some harsh prophesies for those who don’t believe.  But on the other hand, it is an amazing revelation of what the end times are and some of the wonderful things God has planned for His people.  The only people who should be anxious about Revelation are those who are not looking for Christ’s return and are not preparing themselves to meet the Lord.  But for those whose hope is in Christ, Revelation is a blessing because it gives us hope and much to look forward to.

In the lesson today, John the Apostle of Jesus was exiled on the Isle of Patmos and the Lord gave him a Revelation of things to come. One of those things was a picture of the throne of God and some of the activities that were going on around the throne.  He gave a partial description of the one who was sitting on the throne and described some of the living beings and what they were doing.  It is clear from John’s description that the Lord God is highly honored and praised.  We can’t appreciate God’s majesty, power and glory by what we are able to observe from the world we observe.

John was able to take us to a new level by describing the best he could of some of the things he saw.  Finally, the elders were heard making a profound statement concerning creation.  They said that God had created all things and the reason He created thing was for His own pleasure.   For me that means God created all things because He wanted to, it pleased Him to do so and the creation should please Him for creating it.

Revelation tells us about the glorious end of this stage of man’s existence on earth.  God knew we would need something to look forward too and to give us encouragement during out pilgrimage on earth.   That’s why we should be glad for the Book of Revelation.   Well, that’s all for this week’s preview.  Be sure to join us in Sunday School this week for a fuller discussion of this lesson and the general topic of All Glory and Honor.  So, until then

Today’s lesson takes place after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.  The disciples had finished breakfast with Jesus.  Then Jesus began to ask Peter three times did he love Him.  Peter replied yes the first two times, but by the third time he was unsettled and said that Jesus knows all things and knows that he loves him.  Each time Peter answered yes Jesus told him feed His sheep.  He asked Peter these questions to prepare him for what He was to tell him next.  He told Peter in effect that someone was going to lead or take him down a path he didn’t want to go for the gospel’s sake possibly referring to prison and death.  Then He told him to follow Him.

After this, Peter asked Jesus about what was going to happen to John.  Jesus told him not to worry about John’s fate, but to concentrate on his own fate by following Him.  This lesson serves to remind us that each of us are called to walk the path that God has for us.  It is easy for us to look at what others are doing and compare what we are doing with what they are doing or compare our situation with the situation of others.  When we engage in such thought, we may begin to have feelings we are being asked to do more than someone else or that we have it harder than or not as good as someone else.  These kinds of thoughts can lead to jealousy and envy which lead to unfaithfulness and sin.

I’m glad Jesus included this in the gospel because it lets us know that everyone is different and everyone has their own unique role and assignment in the kingdom of God.  We are not to judge or measure our work by the work or measure of others.  Instead we must seek to make sure what God is asking us to do and do it to the very best of our ability.  This will prove to be impossible when we are concerning and measuring ourselves and work with that of others.   Well, that’s all for this week’s preview.  Be sure to join us in Sunday School this week for a fuller discussion of this lesson and the general topic of All Glory and Honor.  So, until then

Today’s lesson takes place after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.  It was early Sunday morning when several women went to the sepulchre to anoint the body of Christ in order to give Him a proper Jewish burial.  His body had been taken down from the cross hastily because of the approaching Sabbath and placed in the tomb.  While wondering how they were going to get into the sepulchre on their way there, they were surprise to see the tomb open and even more surprised to discover that Jesus was not there.  Two other worldly beings explained to them that Jesus has risen as He said He would and for them to go and tell His disciples to meet Him in Galilee.  Then they remembered what Jesus had said.

When the disciples got the news, they found what they heard difficult to believe so at least two of them went to the sepulchre to see for themselves and found it just as the women had said.  This left all of them scratching their heads wondering what could this all mean?  In the meantime, two other disciples met a stranger along the road and begin discussing the events surrounding the death of Jesus.  Not knowing the stranger was Jesus, He began to explain the prophesies and scriptures concerning Jesus.  And as they prepared to eat, the stranger blessed the food and at that moment the two disciples recognized that the stranger was Jesus and He vanished from their sight.

These two events were among the first to indicate that Jesus was no longer dead, but alive.  There were other events to follow these that testify of the fact the Jesus had indeed arisen.  The question for us today is whether or not we believe their testimonies combined with any other evidence we have to give us reason to believe Jesus is alive and well.  Even if there is a way to prove definitely that Jesus rose that just isn’t God’s style.  God values faith and nobody needs faith when you have proof.  Easter is the day we all get to honor the sacrifice God made on our behalf to secure our deliverance from death which we call salvation.

If Jesus did not rise, then Easter is a meaningless holiday that just gives people an excuse to spend more money.  But on the other hand, if Jesus is alive, Easter means that we have the opportunity to experience life in the fullness that God intended for mankind.  You can get a better understanding of this lesson by reading the daily SS readings found in your SS book which can also be accessed through our website and mobile app.  Well, that’s all for this week’s preview.  Be sure to join us in Sunday School this week for a fuller discussion of this lesson and the general topic of All Glory and Honor.  So, until then

It time once again for our weekly Sunday School preview so thanks for joining me and welcome back.  The Spring Quarter entitled “Acknowledging God” focuses on ways God’s people have acknowledged His Greatness.  The March unit is entitled “Follow in My Ways” and provides four lessons drawn from the books of Genesis and 2 Chronicles showing how Abraham and Solomon acknowledged God by following His guidance.  This Sunday’s lesson is entitled “Keep My Statutes And Ordinances” or “Get It Together”.

In today’s lesson we see God communicating with Solomon after the Temple dedication affirming to him that He has heard his prayers and has accepted the temple as a place of sacrifice and to place His Holy name there forever.  Then God goes on to say that if He withholds His blessings from Israel or sends something undesirable their way, if the people will sincerely repent then He will remedy what has been done.  He assures Solomon that His eyes and hears will continually be upon the temple and the prayers of the people made there.

On a more personal note, He tells Solomon that if he will walk after Him as his father David, then He would fulfill the promise He made to David to keep one of his seed upon the throne of Israel.  Then He warns Solomon that if he fails to follow Him and begins to engage in idolatry, then He will unseat Israel from the land He gave them and the temple upon which He placed His name will be ruined along with the nation.  And when people see and wonder what happened, the answer will be that they forsook following the Lord their God which led to their desolation.

And things happen to Israel just as God said they would.  God is merciful and He is just.  Only people should not try God’s patience or squander His grace and mercy.  For He is the God of “IF” which means God will do something if we do something.  Salvation is not just about citing a few words, joining a church or even doing good deeds.  Salvation is about covenant relation with God which means walking with Him in order to seek and perform His will for our lives.  And though they were warned, this is what Solomon failed to do and the people usually don’t rise any higher than their leaders in their moral behavior.  As a result, they forsook God and God forsook them.

The same is true today for all who would claim Jesus as Lord and Savior.  It’s not so much about the talking as it is about the walking daily with God in Christ.  God’s mercy and forgiveness is there if and when we need it just as it was for them but only for those whose repentance is sincere and God face seeking.  You can get a better understanding of this lesson by reading the daily SS readings found in your SS book which can also be accessed through our website and mobile app.  Well, that’s all for this week’s preview.  Be sure to join us in Sunday School this week for a fuller discussion of this lesson and the general topic of Follow in My Ways.  So, until then

Last Sunday’s lesson examined Solomon’s temple dedication prayer he prayed before all Israel.  In today’s lesson we see what happened at the conclusion of that prayer.  First of all, the bible says the fire of the Lord came down and set fire to the burnt offering and sacrifices that were in place and dedicated to the Lord.  In addition to that, the glory of the Lord then filled the temple.  This is significant and amazing in several respects.

These two acts gave the congregation of Israel proof that the Lord is real and hears the prayers of men just in case anyone doubted.  It also demonstrated that the Lord was satisfied with the temple and favorable with what Solomon had prayed.  Finally, God manifested Himself in a cloud that was so holy that no one could enter the temple because of it leaving no doubt about His presence and placing His name in that place.  The reaction of the people who witnessed all this was one of awe and fear until they all fell down and bowed their heads in praise and worship at what they beheld.

After this, the king and the people began seven days of sacrifices to the Lord as part of the dedication of the temple in honor of the Lord which included music and praise.  At the end of the sacrifices, a solemn assembly was convened to allow the people to consecrate and dedicate themselves to the worship and service of the Lord.  This was probably the high mark in the sincerity and devotion the nation of Israel to serve the Lord.  Over the months and years that followed, the people’s devotion and sincerity began to diminish until it got to the point that they became idolatrous which led to their eventual demise and the destruction of this beautiful temple.

Our worship and devotion today is hardly worthy of the God who not only sanctified this temple but sanctified us through the shedding of His own blood to deliver us from death.  We didn’t see the fire fall from heaven or the cloud fill the temple or Jesus hang on the cross and rise again.  But faith informs us that this same God is just as real today as He was to all those who did see and that He is the same God now as He was then and He’s ready and able to fulfill all that He said He would.

So, when we consider all that He has done, is doing and shall do for us, let’s worship Him with the love and devotion He is worthy to receive.

Solomon was the son of King David.  King David was a man who loved God and followed Him even though he sinned and gave the enemies of God occasion to blaspheme His holy name with his affair with Bathsheba.  But despite this failing, God promised David that there would never fail a man to sit upon his throne if His sons would follow Him as he did with their whole heart.  After David’s death, Solomon followed him on the throne and when God asked him what he would like to have as a gift, instead of money or riches or fame, Solomon asked for wisdom.  God granted him wisdom and gave him the other things he did not ask for.

Solomon built the temple his father wanted to build but God would not allow him to build.  It was magnificent by ancient standards and stood for about 400 years until it was destroyed by the Babylonians.  At the dedication service, Solomon prayed before all the people and asked the Lord to fulfilled His promise regarding Israel and David His servant.  He asked Him to watch over this temple day and night and hear the prayers that will be prayed there and attend unto the sacrifices.  He asked that the Lord’s name and presence be upon the temple and that He would have mercy and hear the cries of His people.

Today, Christians believe that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of God’s promise to never fail to have a man sit upon the throne of David.  While David’s descendant kings, including Solomon, failed to walk before the Lord as David did, even though some did much better than others, the coming of Jesus Christ to sit on the throne of David was all in God’s redemptive plan for mankind.  He is the King of Kings and the Lord or Lords and of His kingdom there shall be no end and He shall forever sit on the throne of David.

Jesus is the Author of our faith, but Abraham is the father of our faith.  The bible teaches us that Abraham believed God and because of that belief God imputed or ascribed unto him righteousness.  God called Abraham while he was still a heathen and idol worshipper like we were and some still are.  Abraham was following the practices of the people his day when he heard the voice of God calling him to come out from among his family, neighbors and friends and follow Him and in return God would bless him and honor him with blessings he could not achieve on his own.  This is what Abraham believed.

He trusted that God would do what He said He would do and obeyed His voice and did whatever God asked Him to do.  This belief demonstrated through obedience is why God declared Him righteous.  It is this example of belief and obedience that makes Abraham the father of our faith.  Everyone that God will declare righteous will follow this example.  Today’s lesson recalls one of the acts of obedience that helped to cement Abraham’s place as the father of our faith.  Abraham was command by God to offer his own son unto Him as a sacrifice and test of His allegiance to Him.

Abraham was old and so was his wife and Isaac was their only child.  They both loved him very much and had waited a long time for him.  In order for God to fulfill His promise to Abraham, Abraham would need a son to carry on his name.  If he killed Isaac, how could that promise be fulfilled?  Abraham didn’t know the answer to that question but he believed God would make it happen because He said He would.  Therefore, Abraham was willing to sacrifice His own son in obedience to God because he believed God would still do what He said.  Just as Abraham was about to slay Isaac, God stopped him from doing so.  He had passed a great test and demonstrated His love and faith in God.

Ours is a faith of works like Abraham.  There can be nothing we are willing to withhold from God, not even our own children.  If we are to receive the inheritance, we must prove ourselves to be the children of Abraham in believing that God will provide and being obedient to His word.  True believers worship and trust God and hear and obey His voice.  They follow the example of faith that Abraham did and are called the children of Abraham.

SS Preview Feb. 25, 2018

Greeting Members and Friends

It time once again for our weekly Sunday School preview so thanks for joining me and welcome back.  The Winter Quarter entitled “Faith In Action” explores faith as both belief and action.  The February unit is entitled “Self-controlled, Upright, and Godly Faith” and looks at passages from the books of Acts, James, and 1 Timothy emphasizing the importance of faith authenticated by works and faith that helps to transform lives.  This Sunday’s lesson is entitled “The Good Fight of Faith” or “Be Strong”.

Timothy was a younger companion of Apostle Paul who travelled many places with him and whom he grew to have great love and confidence.  Their relationship reminds me of the one between Dr. MLK, Jr. and Andrew Young in their struggle for civil rights.  Dr. King and Apostle Paul were the leaders and mentors of their young companions and took most of the hits.  But they trusted and relied on their younger co-laborers to carry out their important assigned task and even to stand in for them on occasion.  They were both important to the work Paul and King were doing.

In the lesson today, Paul has send or left Timothy in charge to complete some things in Ephesus he wanted to do himself but was unable to get there to complete.  The entire letter addresses the things he wants Timothy to know, do and teach in his place in order to establish the church there in Ephesus.   In this 6th chapter of this 1st Epistle to Timothy, there are several major points Paul communicates.  Paul addresses the slave’s or servant’s relationship to their masters.  To protect the gospel from being maligned, slaves and servants were to give masters their proper respect, especially to those masters who were believers.

He cautions Timothy to be aware of and shun those whose intent is to foster debate and who fail to adhere to the words of the Lord and to godliness.  Furthermore, he adds some see Christianity as a means to riches and gain.  The desire for wealth and gain leads to apostasy and sorrow.  Learn to be content with the necessities of life because we didn’t come into the world with anything and we can’t leave with anything.  On the other hand, those who are rich and wealthy, should not trust in their riches, but instead share what they have and do good deeds and works.

Lay hold of eternal life by blamelessly pursuing righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness or meekness trusting and believing that from God you will receive the reward.  He ascribes to God the knowledge of Christ’s return, true sovereignty and supreme rule, immortality, and unapproachable and invisible light.  Finally, do allow yourself to be taken in or misled by those who trust in false knowledge or science in an attempt to discredit or circumvent the gospel.  In other words, Paul is counting on Timothy to exercise the good fight of faith and to be the type of example the young church needs to get in up and going in his place.

Like Paul, Dr. King relied on Andrew Young to do some things he couldn’t get to or do himself and expected he would do them right and get them done.  Paul instructed “his son in the Lord” to be faithful to the gospel and get whatever he needed him to do completed while reminding him for whom and for what he was doing it for.  You can get a better understanding of this lesson by reading the daily SS readings found in your SS book which can also be accessed through our website and mobile app.  Well, that’s all for this week’s preview.  Be sure to join us in Sunday School this week for a fuller discussion of this lesson and the general topic of Faith In Action.  So, until then
