Leading Justly – Malachi 2:1-9-12; 3:5-6

1  “And now this commandment is for you, O priests.

2  “If you do not listen, and if you do not take it to heart to give honor to My name,” says the LORD of hosts, “then I will send the curse upon you and I will curse your blessings; and indeed, I have cursed them already, because you are not taking it to heart.

3  “Behold, I am going to rebuke your offspring, and I will spread refuse on your faces, the refuse of your feasts; and you will be taken away with it.

4  “Then you will know that I have sent this commandment to you, that My covenant may continue with Levi,” says the LORD of hosts.

5  “My covenant with him was one of life and peace, and I gave them to him as an object of reverence; so he revered Me and stood in awe of My name.

6  “True instruction was in his mouth and unrighteousness was not found on his lips; he walked with Me in peace and uprightness, and he turned many back from iniquity.

7  “For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge, and men should seek instruction from his mouth; for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts.

8  “But as for you, you have turned aside from the way; you have caused many to stumble by the instruction; you have corrupted the covenant of Levi,” says the LORD of hosts.

9  “So I also have made you despised and abased before all the people, just as you are not keeping My ways but are showing partiality in the instruction.

5  “Then I will draw near to you for judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers and against the adulterers and against those who swear falsely, and against those who oppress the wage earner in his wages, the widow and the orphan, and those who turn aside the alien and do not fear Me,” says the LORD of hosts.

6  “For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.

Corrupt Leaders – Micah 3:1-2, 9-12; 6:6-8

1.  AND I said, Hear, I pray you, O heads of Jacob, and ye princes of the house of Israel; Is it not for you to know judgment?

2  Who hate the good, and love the evil; who pluck off their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones.

9  Hear this, I pray you, ye heads of the house of Jacob, and princes of the house of Israel, that abhor judgment, and pervert all equity.

10  They build up Zion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity.

11  The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the LORD, and say, Is not the LORD among us?  None evil can come upon us.

12  Therefore shall Zion for your sake be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of the forest.

6  Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old?

7  Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

8  He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

Consequences for Injustice – Habakkuk 2:6-14

6  Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long? and that ladeth himself with pledges!

7  Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall bite thee, and awake that shall vex thee, and thou shalt be for booty unto them?

8  Because thou hast plundered many nations, all the remnant of the peoples shall plunder thee, because of men’s blood, and for the violence done to the land, to the city and to all that dwell therein.

9  Woe to him that getteth an evil gain for his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the hand of evil!

10  Thou hast devised shame to thy house, by cutting off many peoples, and hast sinned against thy soul.

11  For the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it.

12  Woe to him that buildeth a town with blood, and establisheth a city by iniquity!

13  Behold, is it not of Jehovah of hosts that the peoples labor for the fire, and the nations weary themselves for vanity?

14  For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of Jehovah, as the waters cover the sea.

A Prayer for Justice – Habakkuk 1:1-4; 12-14

1  The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see.

2  O LORD, how long shall I cry, and you will not hear! even cry out to you of violence, and you will not save!

3  Why do you show me iniquity, and cause me to behold grievance? for spoiling and violence are before me: and there are that raise up strife and contention.

4  Therefore the law is slacked, and judgment does never go forth: for the wicked does
compass about the righteous; therefore wrong judgment proceeds.

12  Are you not from everlasting, O LORD my God, my Holy One? we shall not die. O LORD, you have ordained them for judgment; and, O mighty God, you have established them for correction.

13  You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, and cannot look on iniquity: why look you on them that deal treacherously, and hold your tongue when the wicked devours the man that is more righteous than he?

14  And make men as the fishes of the sea, as the creeping things, that have no ruler over them?

Called to Accountability – Amos 5:18-24

18  Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord!  For what good is the day of the Lord to you?  It will be darkness, and not light.

19  It will be as though a man fled from a lion, And a bear met him!  Or as though he went into the house, Leaned his hand on the wall, And a serpent bit him!

20  Is not the day of the Lord darkness, and not light?  Is it not very dark, with no brightness in it?

21  “I hate, I despise your feast days, And I do not savor your sacred assemblies.

22  Though you offer Me burnt offerings and your grain offerings, I will not accept them, Nor will I regard your fattened peace offerings.

23  Take away from Me the noise of your songs, For I will not hear the melody of your stringed instruments.

24  But let justice run down like water, And righteousness like a mighty stream.
